Waldo Minert Johnson Jr., or better known by loved ones as “Butch,” passed away peacefully, in his Anchorage home, Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the youthful age of 75. He was surrounded by family and friends listening to live music on a beautiful sunny Alaska spring day. He is survived by the light of his life, Aunt Rose, his children Matthew Yaklich and Katelyn Johnson, several of his favorite cousins and second cousins, lifelong friends, and loves. When someone says they lived life to the fullest, they didn’t come close to how fully Butch lived his. He was THE adventurer. Growing up in San Fransisco, Butch was a wild and free spirit, starting early on in life with dreams of exploring the world like old pirates on the seas. He knew working hard meant he could play harder, so he started his electrician's apprenticeship making his way into the IBEW Brotherhood. In his early 20s the call of the wild took him to Alaska where he explored his passion for incredible outdoor adventures. His daring path took him on the adventures of a lifetime, riding motorcycles throughout North America, cruising in his Dad's El Camino from Alpine, Wyoming to San Francisco and Washington, flying his Piper out to fishing hot spots, big game hunting camp with friends, prospecting for gold in creeks, and being hypnotized by the Northern Light skies. In classic Butch style, he went from one extreme to another. He explored the world searching for the next big wave to ride, from Costa Rica to Hawaii, Baja, Ecuador, Bahamas, and to his place in Belize. Many will remember his love for the ocean, diving down in the clear Caribbean waters exploring the reef and spearfishing for dinner, finding ancient pirate treasures in the sands, and introducing everyone he knew to some incredible adventure they never experienced before. As he said "sun and warm water, that's better medicine than you can buy." He was a man's man and a ladies guy, he always loved to tell a story that made you feel like you were living it with him. Butch couldn't pass up a bet when it came to a little competition, a tune to dance to or a good Tanqueray Martini. He had a magnetic soul, lived hard, fast, and left nothing to the imagination. He traveled far and wide to live a life that left no stones unturned. For a life that passed far too quick, he packed so much into this small space. Waldo, Butch, Dad...his loss will be felt in the hearts of many, but his memory and legacy will live on.
Waldo will be laid to rest with family in San Francisco, CA at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park on Friday, May 14, 2021, at 11:00 am followed by a reception. For those who hope to honor him in Alaska, we will also be holding a celebration of life potlatch with live music at his home June 19, 2021.
This memorial website was created in the memory of our father, Raoul A. Martinez. We will remember him forever.
